The Prancing Pony and Stables Restaurant

The attractive stone stable buildings have been converted into a family room for adults and children and a lounge bar for over 16’s with a blazing wood-burning stove in the winter. Meals are offered to suit most dietary requirements including vegetarians and celiacs - with a list of ingredients provided in the back of the menu to assist those with special diets. The Stables Restaurant, buy the best ingredients, keep things simple, cook things to perfection ... this is the philosophy at The Stables Restaurant at Rivendale. All our meat is sourced from an excellent local butcher who buys the best meat - most of it local, much of it organic, hangs it for a lengthy period to allow the flavour to develop, and does not inject it with water etc. Our menu has a seasonal variation with a daily special board influenced by the availability of local produce such as fish and game. As well as hearty stews and delicious pies, we offer roasts, curries, homemade soups, buffets, roasts and canapés to suit all occasions. Menu and Wine List With a well-equipped commercial kitchen, professional chef on site and wealth of excellent local meat and produce to hand, we can provide delicious snacks and meals to suit most tastes and budgets – from a bacon sandwich to a superb fillet steak. We have considerable experience of catering for weddings, parties and business conferences over the years which have demanded both elaborate buffets and simple roast dinners and so can offer suggestions to suit most requirements. However, our guiding philosophy is to source the best local ingredients, keep it simple, cook it well. Our standard wine list is deliberately brief but offers exceptional value for money. We do however work directly with a wine merchant (rather than through a brewery) who can source a wide range of vintages on a sale or return basis to suit your requirements.

Walks in the Peak District

Walks in the Peak District – Cycle Ways in the Peak District, White Peak, Dove Dale, Tissington, Hartington & Manifold Valleys.

Our Bed and Breakfast in the Peak District offers walkers two distinct types of scenery and wildlife – which surprisingly follows from the underlying type of rock. The Dark Peak is defined by the darker gritstone – from which the National Park’s gritstone mill wheel logo is derived. The gritstone is acidic and allows heathers, bilberries and other acid-loving plants to thrive – along with the insects and animals that feed on them. By contrast, the White Peak around Dove Dale is a whiteish grey limestone which is alkaline and soluble – giving rise to spectacular caves, pinnacles, gorges and underground water courses. The following walks start and finish where the Tissington Trail crosses the turn off from the A515 towards Biggin. This is the ideal location to access Eaton, Biggin, Alsop, Wolfscote, Beresford and Mill Dales, the Tissington Trail and, via the footpaths in them, Dove Dale and The High Peak Trail. Parking is possible at Rivendale Caravan Park (the £2 all-day parking charge is totally redeemable in their café – notify reception and get a receipt). Alternatively, but less secure, you can use the lay-by a few hundred metres south of Rivendale on the A515 at your own risk.

Eco Spa

Peak District Spa offers a Scandinavian Spa experience which takes our guests “back to nature” and is sustainable environmentally. Re-connecting with nature means relaxing in a wooden tub full of hot water enjoying the view over Alsop Dale during the day – or better still under a star-lit night sky made all the better for the absence of light pollution – listening to the sounds of a hunting Tawny Owl. Or maybe it’s the kids having fun. Children 4 years and above may enjoy using the hot tub – always supervised by an adult. Whilst all Spas consume a lot of energy, our hot tub is fuelled by thinning and waste wood from our parkland which would otherwise be shredded & composted. A wood-fired steam room/sauna will shortly be available when we have found one that satisfies our criteria for safety, size and economy. Please enquire at reception for costs and availability. Future Developments Peak District Spa has a detailed consent for a more conventional indoor Spa complex with swimming pool, indoor hot spa, gym, treatments room, sauna & steam room – continuing the long-established traditions of the spa towns in the area – such as Matlock and Buxton.

The Accommodation

Converted from a charming stone barn overlooking Alsop Dale, the four luxurious bed and breakfast rooms feature en-suite shower or bathrooms, solid oak floors and doors, flat screen TV’s, wireless internet access and private parking. The rooms have an uncluttered contemporary ambiance with all the facilities required by people on business, or holiday, looking for accommodation in Derbyshire or the Peak District. The Bed and Breakfast Rooms The bridal room (B&B 1) benefits from a large first floor balcony with fabulous views over Alsop Dale – the perfect location to sit out and watch the sun go down. In common with the other first floor room, it has a bath with shower over in which to enjoy either an invigorating shower or a long relaxing soak. Both first floor B&B rooms benefit from solid oak bedroom floors, luxurious en-suite bathrooms with underfloor-heated marble floors, thermostatic showers, designer radiators and raised ceilings. B&B 1 is only a double. B&B 2 may be a double or twin – please specify at the time of booking. The two ground floor rooms have wet room power showers with shower seats en-suite. These rooms have been designed with both ambulant and disabled clients in mind. Our aim has been to provide a minimum of useful supports whilst maintaining the ambiance of a hotel room rather than a hospital ward. The main entrance doors on the ground floor rooms have level thresholds and minimum 800mm clear widths for ease of use by wheelchairs, switches and sockets are located at more heights and hard-paved, wide parking is located a few metres from the entrance door. Both ground floor bed and breakfast rooms have under-floor heated Travertine floors. B&B 4 has only a double bed, B&B 3 has either a twin or double bedroom - please specify at the time of booking. Common to all rooms: All the rooms benefit from flat screen TV’s with digital freeview channels, high quality beds and bedding, Wi-Fi (at additional cost) additional sound and thermal insulation installed, ventilation systems with pollen filters for the benefit of hay fever sufferers, power showers and secure card access systems for your comfort and security. Other types of accommodation nearby: Rivendale Holiday Park offers pitches for tents, caravans and motor homes in the main pitching area or Wild Flower meadow between ½ and ¾ of a km away. Rivendale also has luxurious static holiday caravans, Yurts and a mobile hot tub for hire. Other forms of accommodation such as Pine Lodges and Pods are currently being added – ideal for families, friends, groups and businesses to book anniversaries, parties and conferences in a variety of accommodation to suit their preference and budget. Environmentally Friendly The letting rooms themselves have toilets fed by rainwater and domestic hot water heated using waste heat from the beer cellar cooler. They are insulated in excess of current building regulations, fitted with oak windows with argon-filled double glazing, space heated using a “Sedbuk A rated” (most economical) gas condensing boiler. Nearly all illumination is provided by low-energy lights and the rooms are ventilated with a system that mechanically recovers heat from the stale room air. Rivendale Holiday Park has now won 10 David Bellamy Gold Awards for protecting the environment hence guests can be assured that their holiday - whether in Peak District Spa’s rooms or Rivendale’s facilities – is not “costing the earth”.
